Exclusive: Why Apple should release the widescreen iPod in addition to the iPhone.

(A Short Ramble)

Ever since Apple patented a touch-screen about the size of an iPod early last year, rumors of them developing this widescreen ipod have soared through the roof -that is, until Apple announced the iPhone on January 9th. Does this mean we won't get our widescreen iPod? No, obviously the widescreen iPod was just a rumor all along, however it may just be the best move for Apple yet.

It doesn't matter on what site you first saw a mockup of the "Widescreen iPod," the results were always the same - comments flooding with "oohs" and "aahs" and "That's what I'm waiting fors". The truth is, Apple put a lot of time and money into developing this new iPhone advertised to be part iPod, part phone, and it looks almost identical to the "Widescreen iPod." Why wouldn't anyone want it?

Well, first off, Apple made a mistake. A big one. By allowing Cingular to be the sole service provider for the iPhone, Apple has cut out everyone using networks other than Cingular. You may say, "So what's the big deal? Why not switch over ti Cingular?" Well, yes you could always do that, but lets see just how much of our wonderful fake iPod we get out of switching over.

  1. We can view websites wirelessly through it's WiFi connection.
  2. We can watch videos. Not many though, remember? It's ONLY 8GB!
  3. We can have fun with Apple's high tech. Multi-Touch Display | OSX | Multiple forms of Wireless | Neat little sensors
  4. We can pay $599 for only 8GB of storage. Compared to $349 for 80GB for iPod Video

Ok, it may be worth the extra cash with all the nifty features, but that's all they are! Nifty features. This is exactly what most people look for in CELLPHONES! What about the nice&easy laid-back movie lovers that have been waiting for the perfect little portable device? They have bought iPod videos because of the good price vs. space, and ease of use. Notice, I didn't mention the screen? Just about the only downside for iPods (besides the recent audio quality issues) thus far have been the tiny screen. This is ok - because the small screen makes room for the almighty click-wheel. Now what would happen if you made the entire front a touchscreen like the iPhone, kill a few features like the camera, Cingular "Edge", and the whole cell-phone system, and dropped in a nice 80-100GB hard drive? Of course, you would have to keep the Bluetooth to finally make those wireless near-invisible earbuds I've wanted for Christmas a reality.

So what to do now? Well, even though recommending Microsoft to anyone is generally a bad idea, the Zune player may very well be the best choice for the time being. If storage wouldn't be such a bad issue, the Sony PSP would also be a healthy alternative. All in all, we should just cross our fingers and hope Apple decides to release the "Widescreen iPod" - in addition to the iPhone.
